The 4pm Protocol
A six-step plan for the two hours that break everyone.
The 16:00–18:00 window is not a discipline problem. It is a predictable physiological crash with a school pickup attached. You cannot stop it. You can get in front of it.
15:30 — Feed the crash before it lands
A proper snack, with protein, before the mood turns. Cheese, boiled egg, hummus, yoghurt, toast with peanut butter. Not crisps, not a biscuit, not a fruit pouch that is essentially a small sugary drink.
The 16:00 meltdown is usually a 15:30 decision.
16:15 — Move the body for twenty minutes
School runs on adrenaline and sitting still. Both need to be metabolised. A scooter, a walk, a garden, a puddle, a dance video, a trampoline. Anything that raises the heart rate for twenty minutes.
Do not attempt to do this after the crash has started. This is preventative medicine, not emergency care.
16:45 — Close the decision desk
From here, the questions are pre-answered. Dinner is decided. Clothes are decided. Screen time is decided. You are not negotiating, you are announcing.
Write the answers on a piece of paper if you have to. Children argue far less with a piece of paper than with a person.
17:15 — Dim the lights
Actually dim them. Lamps, not the big light. Lower light lowers volume; this is not a parenting hack, it is biology. It also signals the start of the wind-down without a single word.
17:30 — Start the bath early
Water is the cheapest sedative available to you. Fifteen minutes earlier than feels necessary. The bath is not a hygiene event, it is a nervous system event.
18:00 — Lower the bar, officially
The success criterion for the evening is not “good behaviour” or “quality time”. It is:
- Everyone alive.
- Everyone mostly clean.
- Everyone fed something.
- Nobody has said the word “fine” through gritted teeth more than twice.
That is a good evening. That is a win. Write it down if you need to.
