About the Department
A fictional office with a real caseload. This page explains the joke, the rules, and why there are no ads.
What this is
Parentedious is a field journal of the world's most repetitive job.
It is run by the Department of Repetitive Labour, a fictional office with a real caseload: the shoes, the snacks, the forms, the 4pm collapse, the book you have read four hundred times.
The reports are filed by Tedious, the Department's owl, who has been awake since 03:47 and has strong views about the stairs.
The Department's position is simple. Parenting is sold as an emotional project and is actually an administrative one. The feelings are real, but they are the byproduct. The actual work — the work that fills the hours — is logistics, and almost nobody counts it.
We count it.
What it is not
- Not a parenting advice site. There is enough advice. Most of it is a listicle wearing a lab coat.
- Not a place to complain about children. Children are not the problem. The problem is that the job is enormous, repetitive, invisible and unpaid.
- Not a brand. No ads, no affiliate links, no “10 must-have” anything.
The voice
Dry, specific, and on your side. Punching up at the institution of parenting — the school apps, the birthday industrial complex, the expectation that you will be delighted at 16:45 on a Tuesday — never down at a four-year-old for behaving like a four-year-old.
Specificity is the whole trick. “Parenting is hard” is a fridge magnet. “At 15:42 my son declared he was starving while holding a cracker” is a Tuesday.
The format
- Incident Reports — the rants. Written as official filings.
- The Manual — the useful bit. Scripts and systems that survived contact with a real household.
- The Ledger — the numbers. One household, not science, emotionally accurate.
- The Screening Room — videos that made us laugh, curated and commented on.
Editorial policy
Everything here is written from one household of two adults and two small children. It is not research. It is not representative. It is a very specific Tuesday, written down carefully, on the assumption that your Tuesday is similar.
Sample size: one. Confidence: low. Emotional accuracy: high.
